THE QUICK ANSWER
Howrah Bridge
Howrah Bridge is a massive cantilever crossing whose steelwork is famously riveted. Its strength comes from the geometry of the cantilever system and thousands of permanent riveted connections.

What am I looking at?
The bridge is a cantilever structure: huge steel arms project from the riverbanks and meet over the Hooghly without intermediate piers in the main navigation channel.
02 · WHY
Why is it here?
Keeping the central river channel free was vital for navigation. Cantilever engineering allowed a very large span while avoiding supports in the busiest part of the river.
03 · BEFORE
What was here before?
Commissioned in 1943, the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking both sides of Kolkata.
LOOK CLOSER
The detail that changes how you see it.
Look at the dense lattice of steel members. The visual complexity is the load path: compression and tension are distributed through the truss rather than carried by one arch or cable.

02 · ARCHITECTURE
What was designed deliberately?
It extended tenders to 23 firms for its design and construction.
03 · ENGINEERING
How does it actually work?
The Howrah Bridge (Bengali: [ɦaoɽa]) is a balanced steel bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India.
04 · NATURE
What is the landscape doing?
The bridge is one of four on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal.
05 · PEOPLE
Who shaped this story?
It carries a daily traffic of approximately 100,000 vehicles and possibly more than 150,000 pedestrians, easily making it the busiest cantilever bridge in the world.

How did it shape the place around it?
History 1862 proposal by Turnbull In 1862, the Government of India asked George Turnbull, chief engineer of the East Indian Railway Company, to study the feasibility of bridging the Hooghly River.

The Howrah Bridge (Bengali: [ɦaoɽa]) is a balanced steel bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943, the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking both sides of Kolkata. Burrabazar is connected with Howrah rail terminal because of this bridge. On 14 June 1965, it was renamed Rabindra Setu after the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and Asian Nobel laureate. It is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.
02
How it came to be
The bridge is one of four on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. The other bridges are the Vidyasagar Setu (popularly called the Second Hooghly Bridge), the Vivekananda Setu and the relatively new Nivedita Setu. It carries a daily traffic of approximately 100,000 vehicles and possibly more than 150,000 pedestrians, easily making it the busiest cantilever bridge in the world. The third-longest cantilever bridge at the time of its construction, the Howrah Bridge is currently the sixth-longest bridge of its type in the world.
03
The detail most people miss
In 1862, the Government of India asked George Turnbull, chief engineer of the East Indian Railway Company, to study the feasibility of bridging the Hooghly River. He had recently established the company's rail terminus in Howrah. He reported on 19 March, with large-scale drawings and estimates, that:
04
Why it still matters
The foundations for a bridge at Calcutta would be at a considerable depth and cost because of the depth of the mud there.
05
Look closer
A good place for the bridge was at Pulta Ghat "about a dozen miles north of Calcutta" where a "bed of stiff clay existed at no great depth under the river bed".
